Merit scholarships by Government of Québec are currently open. The Merit Scholarship award program for foreign candidates is awarded to students who enroll in vocational training, technical training at the college level, or education at the university level. The program is provided to attract the best foreign candidates for schooling in Québec and to inspire student enrolment in programs with good job and research potentials.

Eligibility for Merit scholarships by Government of Québec

  • Vocational training candidates: To be qualified for the Merit scholarships by Government of Québec, candidates need to pursue full-time programs in a vocational training program resulting in one of the following:
  • Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS)
  • Attestation of Vocational Specialization (AVS)
  • Priority is given to international students from leading markets in Asia (China, India and Japan) and the Americas (Brazil and Mexico), and from developing countries that are part of the Francophonie.
  • Technical training students at the college level: Students need to pursue full-time studies in a technical training program leading to a Diploma of College Studies (DCS). The public or private colleges where the programs take place have to be accredited for the reasons of funding and be situated in a Québec region outside the Greater Montréal area.
  • University candidates: Candidates are required to pursue studies or research undertakings at a Québec university. Scholarships are available for:
    • doctoral (PhD) programs
    • postdoctoral studies
    • Short-term research or professional development scholarships

Benefits of Merit scholarships by Government of Québec

The beneficiaries of Merit scholarships by Government of Québec benefit from;

  • a scholarship that provides financial aid all through their studies
  • an exclusion from the difference in tuition fees payable by foreign candidates
  • health insurance cover offered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ)
  • Vocational training candidates: The Merit Scholarship award for 900-hour programs is valued at $14 000. An added sum of $1 400 is included for every extra 100 hours, to at most $26 000 for 1 800-hour programs. Programs of less than 100 hours are not qualified.
  • Technical training students at the college level:The Merit Scholarship is valued at $14 000 per year. The scholarship award beneficiary has to re-apply for the scholarship award on a yearly basis, up to at most three years, which is the normal length of a technical training program.
  • Doctoral research scholarships: $25 000 per year. The maximum length for this scholarship award is three years, with a possible leeway of up to 12 months. In the case of an extension, a monthly allowance of $1 000 is provided.
  • Postdoctoral scholarships: $35 000 for one year, non-renewable.
  • Short-range research or professional development scholarship awards: $3 000 each month for a length of up to four months.
  • Furthermore to the scholarship award, all beneficiaries are entitled to an exclusion from the difference in tuition fees payable by foreign candidates.
  • Health insurance cover offered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).

  • a scholarship that provides financial aid all through their studies

How to Apply for Merit scholarships by Government of Québec

All qualified candidates for the Merit scholarships by Government of Québec must be preselected by an educational institution. Shortlisted applications are then handed in to the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT)
